Spotlight On Security At Civil Aviation Forum

Security risks are the theme of today's event.

Abu Dhabi, Staff Writer:

The two-day Middle East Regional Civil Aviation Security Forum kicks off today, with 'Civil Aviation Security Threats and Risks' being the central theme of this regional event.

Held in co-operation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (Icao), the forum is expected to issue an Abu Dhabi Joint Declaration, which will set a global strategy, along with key principles and standards to deal with aviation security challenges.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General, UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), said: "Civil aviation security has become one of the most vital issues in relation to the global aviation industry due to the increasing threats and risks to this sector and the significant advances in methods of penetrating the security of airports and aviation around the world.

"This necessitates more co-ordination and co-operation between all authorities and bodies in charge of aviation security to set new mechanisms, means and legislations to address the threats and challenges facing the whole world in this field."

He added that the forum is being attended by ministers, presidents of civil aviation authorities and senior officials, and comes within the framework of the UAE's efforts to ensure a secure environment for the civil aviation sector worldwide and particularly in the Middle East, which is seeing extraordinary growth in this vital sector.

Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the GCAA will open the forum. Senior international officials speaking at the conference include Janet Napolitano, Secretary, US Department of Homeland Security; Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, Canada; and Patricia Reverdy, Deputy Executive Secretary of European Civil Aviation Conference.

The first day will feature discussions on best practices of airport and aviation security in addition to a private session dealing with the harmonisation of legislations with international and local standards of civil aviation security.

On the second day, the forum will discuss enhancement of electronic control methods, threats and risks to civil aviation security and the concept of the regional co-operation programme for aviation security.

The event is being held at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr hotel, Abu Dhabi.
